Ecuador to Grant Asylum to Assange
Cool. Hope he gets out. Looks like Julian Assange’s weeks in the Ecuadorian embassyin London may have worked out for him. Ecuador President Rafael Correa has decided to grant the WikiLeaks founder asylum, officials tell the Guardian. They say he was offered asylum months ago. But that doesn’t mean Assange is home free: He’s still got to get out of Britain, which could be impossible—meaning the asylum could ultimately be symbolic, the newspaper notes. Assange could be arrested upon exiting the embassy given that he violated bail conditions, which Ecuador’s foreign minister said was “an issue we have to take into account.” For Ecuador, Assange’s case is “a humanitarian issue,” an unnamed official says, noting that WikiLeaks and Ecuador have been in contact since May 2011. “We see in his work a parallel with our struggle for national sovereignty and the democratization of international relations.”
